18-20% are very generous tips. At buffets, I can’t justify 20% grat. I’ve been a server in the past and I’ve worked both table service and buffet. Servers at Buffets DO NOT do the same work as their conunterparts at a sit down restaurant.
Thanks so much for the podcast! I love listening to each and every episode. Just wanted to say, that although I’ve only been on 1 cruise, my daughters and I can’t wait to go again. I’m a teacher, though, and I try to keep my kids in school at all costs. So, I would love a Mousechat Cruise, but maybe when kids are out of school (and I had a little time to save up)…summer 2014?

I really enjoyed this podcast and plan to share it with others because many people overlook tipping. Concerning housekeeping, (we stay at Shades) I always include tips in my financial planning for the trip. Before we leave I grab envelopes for the amount of days we’re staying and put the daily tip inside and just leave one envelope per day on the bed to “housekeeping”. I like the idea of making a “tipping envelope” as a way of counting down the days until our trip and will definitely use that idea. Thanks!
My job is a Valet in Nashville Tennessee so I wanted to give you some information. This is how I make a living and feed my family. I do the job because I enjoy my job and I’m in my 40s. First I will talk about Disney hotels and hotels in general. Morning valet make more tips since most people tip on checkout. It is best to tip each time coming and going. In the long run the amount is the same for the guest. We write down on the valet ticket if you tipped in advance. That way we know who tips and who does not.
Restaurants: Average tip is $3 per car. One dollar is a low ball. $5 is a real good tip. If you tip in advance we will put your car up front. However, two bucks is not going to get you VIP up front parking. If your car is up front when you come out of the restaurant, we pull up cars to be quicker for the guest and near closing time. Do not say “that’s my car I will walk to it”. Many customers think they do not have to tip if the car is in sight. We did our job; today you got lucky and were a VIP please shows appreciation. Holidays and special events tip more than the norm. I have worked many Thanksgivings and New Years without my family.
Tip payout can be a couple ways. Hours worked divided by valets and amount of tips received for twenty-four hours. Most common amount of tips split for hours worked from start of shift to ending of shift. Here is something to think about with just two valets if you give one dollar that has to be split in half. Now each valet has fifty cents. The federal government gets 30% so now the valet has made twenty cents. Tips are shared. Give the tip to the valet that brought back your vehicle.
If you feel you should tip then tip. “Complementary” means I cannot ask for money but many valets are making $2.13 hour plus tips. Lastly never stiff a valet or server. If you cannot afford a gratuity please visit us on a day you are financially able. We are there to serve you and make you experience great but it is also how we make a living. That said we still will do our best to make you sure you have a magical experience.

How about making a week of it. Have a meet the same week as a cruise then anybody who can cruise can cruise. Anyone who can only do the meet are covered too.
If I had to choose between them I’d take a cruise.

At the hotels, what the typical amount for tipping housekeeping? I never know what’s appropriate.
My brother works for a golf clubhouse that has a restaurant. They has the 18% auto gratuity and that gets split up between all the servers that are on the clock at that time. That allows each server to go home with the same amount. However, any additional cash tips that are left at the table is the servers to pocket.
