If the rumor of the mine-ride is true, I think it is a smart decision on Disney’s part. Lately, Disney seems to be pushing new technology for their rides. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t (Yeti). New rollercoaster technology is very tricky. Back in 1980, the first suspended coaster, The Bat, was built at Kings Island. Two years later it was leveled because it was constantly breaking down. And this ride was designed and built by Arrow Dynamics – a leading rollercoaster designer.
New technologies are expensive and frequently unreliable. New ride installations utilizing new technology at theme parks throughout the country often open months behind schedule and suffer from extensive down-time. I think Disney’s idea is smart. There are over 10 styles of rollercoaster rides (wooden, steel, stand-up, overhead, floorless, etc.) and I’m sure one of these proven technologies would make for a fine ride.
