This week on Mouse Chat, we’re trading the theme parks for a volcano — we take you to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, one of Europe’s most beautiful (and most underrated) family travel destinations. Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, sitting off the northwest coast of Africa, and it’s a direct flight from most major European cities. On this episode we break down why Tenerife is such a great value vacation — especially for Disney fans looking for a new kind of adventure. Think pirate boat tours, whale and dolphin watching, and a subtropical climate that makes it a true 12-month destination.
We spend a big chunk of the episode on Mount Teide, the volcano at the center of the island. Teide is the highest peak in Spain and you can actually ride a cable car most of the way up. The views are unreal — above the clouds, looking out over the whole island and, on a clear day, the neighboring islands of La Gomera and La Palma. We share our tips on timing your visit, what to wear (it’s cold at the top!), and whether renting a car is worth it.
We also dig into the beach scene. Tenerife is famous for its black-sand beaches formed from volcanic rock — Playa Jardín and Playa de la Arena are stunning — but the south end of the island has imported golden-sand beaches that feel more Caribbean. We talk about Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas as the best family-friendly resort areas, where you’ll find big pools, all-inclusive hotels, Siam Park (one of the top-rated water parks in the world), and Loro Parque.
And of course, we couldn’t do a travel episode without talking food. Canarian cooking is its own delicious thing — papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, fresh grilled fish, Spanish tapas, and local wines made from grapes grown in volcanic soil.
