Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland is a different party from Disney World’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: there are more characters, the candy lines move faster, and a haunted trail takes over Redwood Creek after dark. This week Lisa and Debbie are back from Pixie Con in Anaheim with a full trip report from the party, two very different hotel stays, and a 4-night Disney Wonder cruise out of San Diego. Sharpie, Caitlin, and Steve, who all stayed home, ask the questions.

What We Cover This Week
Before the trip report, Sharpie updates us on a change Disney fans have noticed across Walt Disney World: cast member costumes are being simplified into generic uniforms, and the distinctive resort-themed looks are going away. Steve remembers his Grand Floridian front-desk knickers and long white socks, and Lisa describes her multi-piece Fantasyland costume, including velvet vest, petticoat, and apron.
Next comes Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure, where about 30 Pixie Vacations agents spent the first night of Pixie Con. Debbie explains why she calls Disneyland and Disney World “cousins, not siblings.” The treat trails have six to eight stops on one continuously moving path, and almost every stop ends with a character moment: Hades, Oogie Boogie, Doofenshmirtz, and Agatha Harkness from Agatha All Along. The haunted trail through the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail brings fog, lightning, marching hyena shadows, and fairy lights, but the line stretched all the way back to Soarin’. Our tip: grab a drink at the Grand Californian and come back once the line has dropped. Debbie gives the party a 9 out of 10, taking off one point for the West Coast time change.
We also cover the rides: Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! changes its soundtrack after dark, so it’s worth riding twice, and Haunted Mansion Holiday includes that gingerbread smell in the ballroom. WEB SLINGERS broke down just as Lisa reached the loading ramp. Sharpie explains why Disneyland’s Lightning Lane works better than Disney World’s: you can add Multi Pass when you buy your ticket and make selections once you’re inside the park, which is closer to the old paper FastPass. Debbie did nearly all of Disneyland in four hours with an early start and Lightning Lane.
Where We Stayed: Disneyland Hotel Villas vs. SpringHill Suites
Debbie arrived a few days early and tried the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, the Disney Vacation Club tower at the Disneyland Hotel. She liked the spacious room, kitchenette-style wet bar, roomy bathroom, and DVC lobby activities, but the price was high. For the conference the group moved to the SpringHill Suites Anaheim Maingate. Rooms there sleep up to six, breakfast is free, and the walk to the parks and Downtown Disney is easy once you learn the route. However, the hotel has no restaurant, and there aren’t any within a five-minute walk. Note that there are three SpringHill Suites near Disneyland, so double-check the address before you book a ride.
Disney Wonder from San Diego: 4 Nights to Ensenada
After Pixie Con, Lisa drove to San Diego, about 90 minutes, because wildfires had shut down the train. There she boarded the Disney Wonder for a 4-night Baja sailing. The ship docks so close to the waterfront road that it looks parked like a car. San Diego’s airport is only a few minutes from the pier, and a shared transfer van cost Lisa $10 compared with about $25 for an Uber.
Highlights:
- Embarkation-day potato leek soup at Cabanas. Tiana’s Place was the sit-down option, but it was busy.
- Trivia nearly every day. Lisa won a medal and two keychains, and she tested the team on Pixar questions (see below).
- Frozen, A Musical Spectacular in the Walt Disney Theatre: “you want to clap and cheer and hoot and holler.”
- Churro waffles at breakfast, which Lisa calls the best thing she ate onboard.
- Surprise character sightings, including Belle and Moana, and a Sally latte at Cove Café for Halloween.
- A look at how DCL has evolved: the Wonder’s atrium and Triton’s feel cozy next to the Wish and Destiny.
Our stateroom tip: standard vs. deluxe interior
Lisa booked an interior guarantee and got a standard interior. It had no split bathroom and almost no counter space, which was fine for one person but would be a squeeze for four. Most Disney Cruise Line staterooms are deluxe, and that word is the one to look for. A deluxe interior adds the split bath (one room with a sink and toilet, another with a sink and tub/shower), and that small upgrade makes a big difference for families.
| Disneyland & Disney Wonder quick facts | What we found |
|---|---|
| Oogie Boogie Bash treat trails | 6–8 stops per trail, constantly moving, character interaction at the end |
| Haunted Redwood Creek trail | Longest line of the night. Go early or wait for it to drop |
| Disneyland Lightning Lane | Can be added at ticket purchase; selections made in the park |
| San Diego airport to cruise port | Short ride: about $10 shared van, about $25 Uber |
| Interior stateroom | Choose deluxe (split bath) over standard for 3–4 guests |
Play Along: Pixar Trivia
Lisa brought an old Disney cruise trivia sheet, and the crew played along live. Can you name Merida’s three brothers, the city where Pixar Studios is located, Sally Carrera’s hometown, or Boo’s real name? Listen to see how Steve did. (Spoiler: nobody wants him on their team.) Disneyland and Disney Wonder questions we hear most
How is Oogie Boogie Bash different from Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party?
Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure focuses more on characters. Its treat trails move continuously and end with a character interaction, and it adds a haunted trail through Redwood Creek. Lines for candy are faster, and you tend to get more treats per stop than at Disney World’s party.
Is a standard interior stateroom on the Disney Wonder worth it?
For a solo traveler, it’s fine. For three or four guests, upgrade to a deluxe interior: it adds a split bathroom and more counter space, which makes a big difference for a small extra cost.
How far is the San Diego cruise port from the airport?
It’s very close. You can see the port from San Diego International Airport. A shared transfer van cost about $10 per person on our trip, and an Uber was quoted at about $25.
