Short answer: no. Disney Cruise Line asks guests not to hide items around the ship, and crew members collect rubber ducks they find. So the cruise duck tradition that fills Carnival and Royal Caribbean ships with hundreds of ducks per sailing is not a Disney Cruise Line thing, and the kindest move for the crew is to keep your ducks in your suitcase until your next non-Disney sailing.
What are cruise ducks, anyway?
Cruise ducks are small rubber ducks that passengers hide in public areas of a ship for other passengers (usually kids) to find. Whoever finds one keeps it or hides it again. It started on a Carnival sailing in 2018 and spread to most lines through the Cruising Ducks™ Facebook group.
Why Disney is the exception
Disney ships are kept to a very specific standard, and anything left in a public area is treated as lost or misplaced and removed. Guests who have tried report that ducks disappear within the hour. Disney has not run any kind of official duck program, and there is no Disney-approved version of the game. If you see a post claiming otherwise, it is usually a Carnival or Royal Caribbean story with the ship name swapped.
What Disney families do instead
- Fish extenders. The Disney version of leaving gifts for strangers. You sign up in your sailing’s Facebook group, hang a pouch on the fish-shaped hook outside your stateroom, and swap small gifts with other families. Ducks are a popular fish-extender gift, which is the one place a rubber duck belongs on a Disney ship.
- Pixie dust trades and pin trading. Both are welcomed on board.
- Door magnets. Decorating your stateroom door is encouraged, as long as the magnets are removable.
Sailing another line next?
If your next trip is on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Virgin Voyages, MSC or Princess, the ducks are fair game. A free app called Pixie Pals now keeps score: hiders log each duck (deck, section, a hint), hunters on the same sailing see the list and tap Found it!, and there is a leaderboard per sailing plus free printable duck tags with a QR code. It works with no Wi-Fi and has no ads. Free on iPhone and Android, or in the browser. The full tradition guide is on CaribbeanMag.
FAQ
Will I get in trouble for hiding ducks on a Disney cruise?
No one is going to be escorted off the ship over a duck. The ducks will simply be collected, and crew may politely ask you to stop.
Can I give ducks as fish-extender gifts?
Yes. That is the normal way ducks travel on Disney ships.
Does the Pixie Pals app work on Disney ships?
The app lets you pick any ship, but because Disney removes hidden ducks, there is nothing to hunt. Use it on your next non-Disney sailing.
